Press Release!!!!!

Here is Josie's Press Release for Mason County Journal:

Go Nerdy and Proud!!!

Pioneer Nerdy and Proud First Robotics Team Goes To Competition!

It was December 3rd, when my team, Nerdy and Proud, entered the door to Jefferson Middle School (where our competition was held). We weren’t nervous, mainly because we were excited! We were there because for 3 months we worked on a robot that could accomplish various missions. When we got to the pits, I was surprised by how small it was. I mean, I thought we were going to a huge stadium! We set up for the competition by putting up our poster board and setting up the team movie on our mom’s MacBook Pro. We added the final touch to the robots, and the competition began! We got pulled out for questions and demonstrations of our project, the robot, and we were tested on core values such as “gracious professionalism” where the judges assessed how well our team worked together. Then we did the practice competitions in the pit area. Finally, we got to the 3 rounds of the real deal. We didn’t do too good, though. We got 11th place out of 20 teams. However, when it came to the awards ceremony, we each got a participation medal and our team won the “Most Inspirational” trophy. The most important thing we learned at the robotics competition is that “gracious professionalism” is what F.I.R.S.T. Robotics is all about!

How I feel about robotics

My name's Charles, and I feel WOO HOO about robotics!

November 17th Meeting

Hi, my name is Dustin, I am going to write about what is happening. Today is a bit more busy than other days. The builders are building, the programmers are programming, and I had found something to do. I have decided to look at you-tube videos of missions for us to do. Anyway... we're doing fine, we are just getting ready for the next competition on December 3rd. When we get there, we are going to rock the competition!!! Or... maybe we aren't. Who knows, but I'm sure we'll get at least 3rd place.
-Dustin, junior programmer of Nerdy and Proud robotics team.

Practice Competition

We got 6th place in the practice competition out of 24 teams. The competition felt intense. The competition was at Coe Elementary. They call their teams "coebotics", and it is part of their curriculum. We got 93 points on our best try. They didn't do the play, but we got to do it for a judge. Even though we might not get to go to state, we will give it our all!

Interviewing the Robotics Team

Questions for the the teams:
  • How has robotics affected your life?
  • Whats is your job in Nerdy and Proud? How does this affect the group?
  • What inspired you to join the group?
   Charles:
  • I got my first robot when I was 5. It's what I do.
  • I am programer/builder, I help complete the robots.
  • I love robots! I'm glad I'm here to do it.
   Lexi:
  • Robot club helps me learn more about robots.
  • I am in the design group and I take pictures of the members at work!
  • My friends invited me here and I think I was mainly inspired by them!
   Josie:
  • Robotics has changed my life by becoming an after school activity that is not only fun, is also a learning experience.
  • I am part of the design team. I organize the blog and plays, since this is 50% of the grade we do a lot.
  • My dad created the group. I took part because I knew it was going to be fun.
  Guy:
  • I now have a lot more stuff to do after school. It's given me some pressure but it's still fun!
  • I help everyone with the robots, and  I come up with ideas. I believe I am a leading member of the team.
  • The fact that my dad created the group the group. I was interested.
  Jake, a mentor:
  • I have found robots to be interesting and entertaining.
  • I am a mentor, I help teach the student about robots and programming.
  • I would say its a combo of my children's interest in robots, and mine.
Audrey, the little sister:
  • Well, it helps me with computers.
  • I help in almost every part in the group, I believe I am the future of the team.
  • I don't know. My dad is he creator o the group. I loved the idea o the group and the design.

Friday October 21st Meeting

The meeting is at the Beaudoin's house. People are at work, and doing things to improve the robots and the blog. The programmers are programming the robots to complete their missions. The builders are building robots to program. The design team is working on the blog to make it bigger and brighter. We have accomplished most of the play! Many people are working on the robots. They aren't as far as we are, though they are catching up. This meeting we hope to accomplish a lot, and have a good time!

“Nerdy and Proud” Pioneer FIRST Robotics Team -The New Cool
Turns out that our Pioneer Robotics Club is already in the local newspaper. Have a  look at page B-4 of the Sept 1 edition of the Shelton-Mason County Journal. Natalie Johnson, a reporter from the Shelton Mason County Journal came out to our house tonight and I expect there will be another article next week.
That will make 4 articles mentioning us so far.

Pioneer Robot Club Picture Featured in the Press!

Guy's Space Elevator Press Release

"Hello, I am an eighth grader named Guy Beaudoin. I am on my school's FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics team. For those of you who don't know, FIRST is an organization that helps kids learn engineering and programming in an environment where teamwork and gracious professionalism are required. On the 14th of August we went to a competition in Redmond. It was at the Microsoft conference center and it was about the possibility of creating a space elevator. A space elevator is a very large satellite being launched into space and a tether being lowered down to a platform in the ocean. The competition was about building a robot and having it climb up 16 feet of ribbon. Sounds easy, right? Not if you have to build it out of Lego parts. Even though we had already lost (getting no points in any of the three rounds), the judges let us do one last run up the ribbon, and our robot finally worked. When it reached the top carrying four half pound weights everybody in the room was ecstatic. We would have gotten the highest score in our category, and the second highest score of the day if it had been part of our first three runs. Even though we didn't win we learned a lot and participating in this will help us in the FIRST competition. I think that FIRST is an amazing organization and should be an after school program everywhere in the U.S. (or maybe even an in school robotics class). It is a fun and interesting way to learn about robotics and is suited to every age level. There is FIRST Robotics Competition and FIRST Tech Challenge for high school, FIRST Lego League for Intermediate and Middle School, and Jr. FIRST Lego League for kindergarten through third grade. They do cost money for schools, but using donations or the school Kiwanis, they can easily start one up."

Space Elevator Competition

Here is our video of our 4th run carrying two pounds up the 15 foot ribbon. I got too excited when it reached the top and forgot I was filming. We scored 215 points which would have qualified us for the finals. The only problem was that we did it in the 4th run and they only counted the first 3 runs. Oh well, there is always next year!

What is FIRST?

                                                What is FIRST?
FIRST is an acronym for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. There are four different programs in FIRST. First there is Jr.FLL, which is FLL, FIRST Lego League, but for K-3rd grade. The next level up is FLL (The program we're focusing on,) is 4-8th grade. Then there is 9-12th grade, which is high school level. There are two programs, FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge) and FRC (FIRST Robotics Challenge). In FIRST you build, design and program your own robots. Also, Jr.FLL is string pull robots, and FLL is using MINDSTORMS, witch is created by LEGO. FTC and FRC are building robots basically from scrap. FIRST allows you to use your creativity, in making posters, designing robots, designing team shirts and much more. You get a kit, and look online for the mission, and every year it is different. This year, a new challenge awaits!
